Seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
