Stephen Ireland started turning out for the team during pre-season this season through close mate and current team teammate Blake Norton, and the ex- Republic of Ireland player then asked additional former professionals, who all play in a weekly small-sided match, to participate.

Ex- Senegalese forward Niasse, who netted 12 scores in 65 top-flight matches for Everton and still attends their home games, also had his debut versus the opposition - who are based in Liverpool and use an Everton warm-up gear as their uniform.

"My mate Stephen Ireland told me 'join and play, it's good fun'," said the striker.

"After that he told me we were facing a team from the city and the surprise I had when I noticed them sporting Blue shirts - I say this is wrong for me!

"When you still love the game and you know you can still play, wherever you can kick a ball, what are you going to choose?

"Those fans who come and see are pleased and to make a day if they see us playing there and to pose us queries - it's really about the joy of us getting a place we can play, with organisation of course."

"It's a bit unusual but then, I love sprinting and just move inside - I'm not staying back that much," he added.

"We literally have not stopped chatting about it - I was phoning my mum and brother on the journey home.

"The opponents were all really nice, shaking our hands after the match - it was like facing a bunch of regular fellas.

"Now we can't wait for the return fixture."

The manager manages the Collegiate veterans side, who secured the Premier Division title last season, along with his co-manager.

"Our team went one-nil ahead and had a
