Administration Reveals Government Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions filed for a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been brought back to execute layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the government to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the start of October, since funding expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
