A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the morning of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on recently would prevent government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
